Specific leadership team development models will be selected by the coach and leader to best fit team development needs.  The development process supports goal identification, role clarification, establishment of  team processes, and improvement of interpersonal relationships.

Joan’s Process for Leadership Coaching

Establish partnerships

I begin each coaching engagement by establishing partnerships with the  client / organizational leader, the sponsor / client’s manager and Human Resources.  This phase includes agreement on roles and responsibilities, explanation of the process, setting expectations and discussing confidentiality.

Gather and Analyze Information

Gathering information about the client is critical to goal setting and the coaching process.  I work with the client and sponsor to identify key stakeholders from whom to collect feedback and conduct interviews and / or administer a 360 assessment.  The phase usually includes self assessment instruments based on the client’s circumstances and company practices.

Goal Setting

I work with the client to establish clear goals for coaching that will benefit the client, the client’s team and the organization.  The coaching plan, which includes the goals, the specific design for the coaching engagement and the roles and responsibilities, is reviewed with the sponsor for alignment.

Coaching

I partner with the client in a series of private and confidential meetings during which I may question assumptions and support the client in deepening their thinking, creating alternatives, developing perspectives, practicing new behaviors and ways of being, and stimulating reflection.

I support the client through active listening, serving as a thought partner and sounding board, holding them accountable for their action plans, recommending ways to fine tune their development experience, and celebrating breakthroughs in their performance and other successes.

I partner with the client to document progress, evaluate impact and success,  and create a plan for ongoing development.  I facilitate a meeting with the client and sponsor to discuss progress, close out the engagement and confirm commitments to continue the development process.
